Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials
certification, handled
for your business.

Cyber Essentials is the UK Government’s baseline standard for cyber security, backed by the National Cyber Security Centre. Workflo gets Scottish businesses certified: we check where you stand against the five controls, fix the gaps, and manage the assessment all the way through to certification.

Certified ourselves

Get Cyber Essentials ready

Tell us a little about your business and we’ll give you our advice on next steps. Prefer to talk? Call 0333 300 3250.

We only use your details to reply to this enquiry. See our Privacy Policy.

What Is Certified

The five controls, in plain English.

Firewalls

Boundary and device firewalls set so only the traffic you need gets in.

Secure configuration

Default accounts, unused services and weak settings removed everywhere.

Security update management

Supported software only, with high-risk updates applied within 14 days.

User access control

The right people with the right access, separate admin accounts and MFA where it counts.

Malware protection

Anti-malware or application allow-listing on every device in scope.

What It Is

The UK baseline, certified.

Cyber Essentials is an annually renewable certification run by IASME on behalf of the National Cyber Security Centre. It proves your business has the five technical controls in place that stop the most common internet-based attacks. We hold Cyber Essentials Plus ourselves and run our own business to ISO 27001:2022.

5
Technical controls

Identical for Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus.

12 months
Certificate validity

It’s renewed every year so we also carry out an annual security review.

3 days
Time to mark

The assessor’s target once your assessment is submitted.

£25k
Insurance included

Cyber liability cover included for a whole organisation pass. (under £20m turnover.)

Which Level

Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus?

Same controls, different level of assurance.

Level one

Cyber Essentials

This is a verified self-assessment. You answer the official questionnaire about your devices, accounts, software and settings.

Assessment

An online questionnaire is completed before being marked by IASME within three working days of the submission.

If something fails

We’ll receive written feedback and then two working days to fix and resubmit before any additional IASME fees are due.

Good for

Small businesses, first-time certification, and supplier questionnaires that ask for Cyber Essentials without the Plus.

Level two

Cyber Essentials Plus

Everything in Cyber Essentials, then an independent technical audit to prove the controls are really working. This is the one we hold ourselves.

Audit

An auditor does internal and external vulnerability scans and checks on a selection of user devices, every internet gateway and internet-facing server.

Timing & fees

Completed within three months of the Cyber Essentials pass, project costs are based on scope.

Good for

Any business that wants the controls independently tested rather than declared. It is becoming increasingly common for businesses to require this certification.

How We Do It

From gap check to certificate,
without the scramble.

01

Gap check

We review your set-up against the current Cyber Essentials questionnaire and agree the scope with you. You get a plain-English list of what passes and what does not.

02

Fix the gaps

Our technicians close the gaps so you have a more secure infrastructure, we make sure everything is compliant so you’re ready for the assessment.

03

Assessment

We prepare the answers and evidence with you before a director or senior person signs the declaration. The assessment is sent to IASME with marking generally carried out within three working days.

04

Plus audit and renewal

Need Cyber Essentials Plus? We book the audit inside the three month window and get you ready for it. Your certificate lasts 12 months and we’ll work with you to ensure renewal is smooth.

Who We Help

Cyber Essentials for businesses
across Scotland.

Our team is based in Livingston, between Scotland’s two biggest cities. Most Cyber Essentials work is remote and we support business across Scotland the same way.

Small businesses

Cyber Essentials for small business is where the scheme does most good. Ten laptops, Microsoft 365 and a router is a real scope, and the fixes are usually quick once someone knows what the assessor is looking for.

Tenders and supply chains

Public-sector frameworks and larger private customers often cite Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus certification as being mandatory for their suppliers.

Workflo offer Cyber Essentials services across Scotland

Edinburgh, Glasgow and Livingston, and the areas around them: West Lothian, East Lothian and Midlothian.

Further afield

Fife, Falkirk, Stirling, Lanarkshire, Perth, Dundee, and the Scottish Borders.

Common Questions

Cyber Essentials.
Your questions, answered.

How long does certification take?

Once submitted, the assessor aims to mark your assessment within three working days. Before that, it depends on how many of the five controls need work. Most small businesses with a tidy estate are ready to submit within a few weeks of the gap check. You have up to six months from purchase to submit.

Do we need Cyber Essentials Plus?

If a customer, framework or tender names Plus, yes. If nothing is asking for it, Cyber Essentials on its own is a sound baseline and Plus can be added later.

What happens if we fail?

You get written feedback on every non-compliant answer and two working days to fix and resubmit at no extra fee.

Who actually issues the certificate?

Certificates are issued through IASME, the NCSC’s official delivery partner. Workflo prepares you, fixes the gaps, manages the submission and handles the assessor’s questions, so you deal with one team throughout.

Do you cover Glasgow and Edinburgh?

Yes. Our team is based in Livingston, between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and we work with businesses across Scotland. Cyber Essentials work is largely remote; where a Plus audit needs someone on site, we arrange it.
